Before you go

Useful info for Egypt

Documents, visa, money, plugs and health: what you need to know before a stay in Sharm el Sheikh.

Documents

You need a passport with at least 6 months' remaining validity on entry. Alternatively, an ID card valid for travel abroad is accepted, again with more than 6 months' validity, together with two passport photos; the renewal slip (cedolino di proroga) and other temporary documents are not accepted. Always check the Egypt page on viaggiaresicuri.it (or your own government's travel advice) before you travel.

Visa

The tourist visa can be obtained on arrival at the airport (US$25 according to Viaggiare Sicuri, Italy's official travel advice, for up to 28 days) or online via the official Egyptian portal (e-Visa, at least 7 days before travel). For short stays in South Sinai only, there is the free ‘Sinai only’ stamp, but Viaggiare Sicuri still recommends the standard visa: it's the only one that allows you to leave the area.

Currency and payments

The currency is the Egyptian pound (EGP); euros are accepted in many places around the resort and for excursions. There's an ATM at the central reception in Coral Bay. Small, frequent tips are a local custom.

Plugs and time zone

220 V power, type C and F sockets: small Italian plugs and Schuko plugs fit, but three-pin inline plugs (type L) need an adaptor. Sharm is usually one hour ahead of Italy.

Health and insurance

The European Health Insurance Card isn't valid in Egypt, so travel with travel medical insurance. Drink bottled water and protect yourself from the sun in the middle of the day. The resort has a medical centre and a pharmacy.

Italian Consulate

The Honorary Consulate of Italy for the Sinai is located right inside the Domina Coral Bay, in the main reception building (source: Viaggiare Sicuri).

Phone and internet

The rooms have Wi-Fi. To stay connected outside the resort, a local SIM card is a good idea (Vodafone Egypt, for example); you can also buy one at the airport.

Excursions outside Sharm

Before booking trips outside the Sharm el Sheikh area, read the latest updates on viaggiaresicuri.it: the Italian Foreign Ministry gives specific advice on the rest of the Sinai and on travelling by car at night.

What to wear

Around the resort, beach-holiday style is fine. For Old Sharm (Old Market) and the mosque, it's best to cover your shoulders and knees.

Information updated September 2026. Entry rules can change: always check viaggiaresicuri.it (or your own government's travel advice).
